Two South African tourists, Mr John Jouber Wesson and his spouse, were stranded in the Makgadikgadi Pan, 34km from Nata Village, on December 21, 2025, after their GPS led them onto an unsuitable route. A joint effort by the Botswana Defence Force and the Botswana Police Service rescued them via helicopter, and their vehicle was recovered on December 28.

The recovery operation, led by Major Joseph, faced challenges due to bad weather and waterlogged terrain. The tourists were safe and healthy, thanking authorities for their assistance.

The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and aerial surveillance, especially during the rainy season. Travellers are advised to exercise caution in swampy areas.
