Tariq Babitseng has been elected as the new Botswana Football Association (BFA) President following a highly anticipated election process in Palapye. Babitseng’s victory came after his main opponent, incumbent Maclean Letshwiti, withdrew from a re-run election, securing Babitseng’s unopposed rise to the presidency.
The initial round of voting saw Babitseng secure 21 votes, while Letshwiti garnered 16, and Masego Ntshingane received just 1 vote. However, no outright winner was declared, as BFA election rules require a candidate to secure at least 70% of the vote to win. A re-run between Babitseng and Letshwiti was scheduled, but Letshwiti’s withdrawal from the race cleared the path for Babitseng to assume the role of president.
Babitseng’s journey to the presidency was marked by his clear vision for the future of Botswana football, which he outlined in August when he announced his candidacy. In his statement, Babitseng said:
“My decision to run is driven by a deep passion for football and a steadfast commitment to advancing the sport within our nation. Over the years, I have witnessed the tremendous potential that Botswana’s football community holds, and I believe that with the right leadership, we can elevate our football to unprecedented heights.”
He emphasized his commitment to grassroots development, improved infrastructure, and enhanced support systems for players, coaches, and officials. Babitseng’s vision extends beyond mere administration, as he seeks to unify the football fraternity and foster a culture of transparency and collaboration within the BFA.
“Football should be a unifying force, bringing together individuals from all walks of life to celebrate the beauty of the game. As a leader, I will focus on grassroots development, ensuring young talent is nurtured and given the opportunities they deserve,” he said.
With his election confirmed, Babitseng takes over as BFA president alongside a new leadership team, including Vice President 1 Maokaneng Bontshetse and Vice President 2 Tico Kamati. His leadership promises to prioritize open communication, financial transparency, and strong partnerships with key stakeholders, including clubs, players, and sponsors.
“I believe in the importance of transparency, accountability, and collaboration within the BFA. Together, we will create an environment where football can thrive, and where Botswana can compete on the continental and global stages,” Babitseng affirmed in his candidacy statement.
