Botswana recorded a slowdown in new motor vehicle registrations during the third quarter of 2025, pointing to easing consumer demand in the transport sector. This is according to Statistics Botswana’s Transport and Infrastructure Statistics Brief, Quarter 3, 2025 .

A total of 10,324 vehicles were registered for the first time in Q3, representing an 8.6 percent decline from the previous quarter. Passenger cars continued to dominate registrations, making up 72.7 percent of the total, though their numbers also fell quarter-on-quarter.

Gaborone remained the main hub for vehicle registrations, recording 57.1 percent of the national total.

Used vehicles remained the preferred option for buyers, accounting for 77.8 percent of first-time registrations. Vehicles imported from Japan dominated the market, contributing 66.8 percent of all new registrations, while brand-new vehicles accounted for just 22 percent, reflecting continued price sensitivity among consumers.

Gaborone remained the main hub for vehicle registrations, recording 57.1 percent of the national total. The decline may be linked to tighter household budgets, rising import costs, and delayed purchasing decisions amid broader economic pressures.
