The Government of Botswana has announced with deep sadness the passing of former Botswana Police Service Commissioner Simon Adolf Hirschfeld, describing his death as a significant national loss and the end of an era in the country’s security institutions.

In a statement issued by Minister for State President, Defence and Security Moeti Caesar Mohwasa, government extended condolences to Hirschfeld’s family, relatives, former colleagues and all those whose lives were touched by his decades of public service.

Hirschfeld’s career in policing spanned more than 39 years, beginning on May 1, 1956 when he joined the then Bechuanaland Protectorate Police as a constable. Through what government described as unwavering dedication, professionalism and discipline, he rose through the ranks before retiring as Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service on July 31, 1995.

The government noted that Hirschfeld made history in 1971 when, at the age of 36, he became the first Motswana to be appointed Commissioner of Police. His appointment came at a pivotal time in the country’s development and was seen as a milestone in the localisation of leadership within Botswana’s security sector following independence in 1966.

His distinguished service earned him numerous honours and awards, among them the Botswana Police Medal for Meritorious Service, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Service Order and several national commemorative medals.

For 24 years, from 1971 to 1995, Hirschfeld led the Botswana Police Service, overseeing its expansion, modernisation and professionalisation. Government credited him with helping transform the police force into a more nationally representative institution and laying foundations that continue to guide the service today.

Throughout his career, Hirschfeld served at several police stations and departments, including Francistown, Lobatse, Ramatlabama, Security, Depot and Police Headquarters. He also pursued extensive professional training both locally and abroad, including studies at the Hendon Police Training School in England and specialised courses in radio operations, police administration and investigative work.

His distinguished service earned him numerous honours and awards, among them the Botswana Police Medal for Meritorious Service, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Service Order and several national commemorative medals.

Mohwasa said Hirschfeld would be remembered not only as a senior police officer but also as a pioneer who helped shape Botswana’s policing system and contributed significantly to the country’s safety, stability and development.

“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate a life that contributed significantly to the safety, stability and development of our country,” the minister said, adding that Hirschfeld’s story forms part of Botswana’s broader journey from colonial administration to a sovereign nation built on professionalism and public service.

Government once again extended its deepest condolences to the Hirschfeld family, saying his life and service left a lasting impact on the nation.
