Botswana has taken a significant step toward strengthening maternal and reproductive health services through high-level international engagement at a global obstetrics and gynaecology forum held in Kenya.

From 9–13 February 2026, Dr. Francoise Dudu Rubgega, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Lecturer at the University of Botswana Faculty of Medicine, represented Botswana at a strategic meeting convened by the President of the International Federation of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO), Frank Lowen. Dr. Rubgega also serves at Princess Marina Hospital and practices part-time at Sidilega Private Hospital.

The meeting took place in Mombasa alongside the Congress of the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecology Society, which celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking a milestone for the region’s obstetrics and gynaecology community.

Health experts agree that strengthening maternal and reproductive health services has far-reaching benefits, improving outcomes for women and families while contributing to Botswana’s broader vision of a healthier and more resilient nation.

Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between Botswana and FIGO, with particular emphasis on training support and research partnerships. Proposed areas of cooperation include access to advanced medical equipment, specialist expertise to build local capacity, and joint research initiatives aimed at driving innovation and knowledge exchange in women’s health.

“These opportunities are vital for Botswana,” Dr. Rubgega says, highlighting the country’s steady progress in obstetrics and gynaecology. “Partnerships with international experts will accelerate our advancement toward global standards of care.”
