BDP Reaffirms Its Commitment to Good Governance and Accountability

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has taken note of the recent press conference statement issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Without prejudice to any matter that may be before the relevant authorities or the courts, the BDP wishes to reaffirm its unwavering support for all lawful efforts to investigate and prosecute acts of corruption, without fear or favour, and to ensure that the proceeds of crime are recovered from those found responsible.

We welcome the assurance given by the Director of Public Prosecutions that there will be no political interference in the execution of his duties. That assurance matters because the strength of any democracy lies not only in the laws it writes, but in the courage and independence with which those laws are applied. It is important to remind ourselves that the Constitution of Botswana, together with the legal and institutional framework that enables the investigation and prosecution of crime, was developed under the leadership of the BDP led government. This reflects a long-standing belief that democracy must be anchored in strong institutions, accountable leadership, and governance that serves the public interest. The BDP has always stood for these values, and we do so today.

At the same time, we reaffirm the BDP’s committment to the principle of fairness under the law. In Botswana, every person has the constitutional right to defend themselves, and every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Our own Constitution is clear on this matter. Article 12.3, read together with Article 12.4 of the BDP Constitution, prohibits members from using their official positions or Party membership for personal gain, private benefit, or favouritism inconsistent with the purpose of the office they hold, whether within the Party or in public service. The Constitution further prohibits members from engaging in corrupt practices or participating in activities that are contrary to Party policy, the interests of the Party, and, above all, the interests of Botswana.

At the same time, we reaffirm the BDP’s committment to the principle of fairness under the law. In Botswana, every person has the constitutional right to defend themselves, and every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

The BDP believes that the fight against corruption must be pursued with firmness without fear or favour. It must not be driven by political convenience, but by evidence, due process, and fidelity to the law.
