Football fans are set for a nostalgic celebration of the beautiful game when legendary players from Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Township Rollers and Mochudi Centre Chiefs converge at the National Stadium on Saturday, June 20, for the fourth edition of the Betway Clash of Legends. The tournament will feature four matches, comprising two semi-finals, a third-place playoff and the final.

This year’s edition marks a departure from the tournament’s previous national-team format, with organisers introducing a club-based competition that brings together four of the most recognised football brands from Botswana and South Africa.

The official squads released ahead of the event feature several well-known names from the clubs’ recent history.

Kaizer Chiefs Legends will be coached by Thabo Mooki and include former players such as Brilliant Khuzwayo, Brian Baloyi, Cyril Nzama, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Mandla Masango, Willard Katsande, Lebogang Manyama, Jabu Mahlangu, Thuso Phala and Siyabonga Nomvethe.

The event has received a major boost through a P1.5 million sponsorship from Betway Botswana, which became the tournament’s title sponsor earlier this year. Organisers have said the tournament seeks to celebrate football heritage while recognising the contribution of retired players to the sport.

Orlando Pirates Legends have named a squad featuring Moeneeb Josephs, Jackson Mabokgwane, Siyabonga Sangweni, Happy Jele, Lucky Lekgwathi, Clifford Ngobeni, Mpho Makola, Andile Jali and Lehlohonolo Majoro. The team will be guided by coaches Bruce Ramokadi and Eugene Zwane.

Mochudi Centre Chiefs Legends will be led by coach Oteng Limkokwing Moalosi and include former stars such as Mompoloki Sephekolo, Bobby Mathe, Arnold Chaka, Keabetswe Jenamiso, Elvis Meleka, Lesego Galenamotlhele, Dirang Moloi, Pontsho Moloi, Godfrey Veron Ngele and Tendai Nyamadzawo.

Township Rollers Legends have assembled a squad that includes Lesego Moeng, Rafael Nthwane, Edwin Olerile, Boniface Makolo, Mogogi Gabonamong, Thapelo Balepi, Ofentse Nato, Lawrence Majawa, Edwin Moalosi, Phenyo Mongala, Joel Mogorosi and Terrence Mandaza.

Saturday’s tournament is expected to rekindle some of the game’s most memorable rivalries, including the famous Soweto rivalry between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, as well as the long-standing battles between Botswana football giants Township Rollers and Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

The action gets underway at 10am at the National Stadium. Tickets are priced at P100 for the Grand Stand, P70 for the Panda Stand and P50 for the North and South Stands.
