Orlando Pirates legends were crowned champions of the 2026 Betway Clash of Legends after defeating Mochudi Centre Chiefs Legends 3-0 in the final at the National Stadium on Saturday. The game brought the curtain down on a football spectacle that attracted thousands of supporters despite cold temperatures and intermittent rain.

President Duma Boko was among the spectators for the final, which capped a day of football nostalgia featuring former stars from Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Township Rollers and Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

Founded by Nic Mathews in 2023, Clash of Legends has grown from a one-off exhibition into one of Botswana’s biggest football showcase events, attracting regional interest while providing a platform for former players to remain connected to the game and its supporters.

Founded by Nic Mathews in 2023, Clash of Legends has grown from a one-off exhibition into one of Botswana’s biggest football showcase events, attracting regional interest while providing a platform for former players to remain connected to the game and its supporters.

“What began as an idea has grown into a regional movement,” Mathews said after the tournament. He credited Sekhana Koko and others who embraced the vision from the outset, adding that the event had demonstrated a tangible social impact beyond the football itself.

Mathews said the project was built on the belief that football legends still have a powerful role to play in inspiring younger generations, echoing FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s observation that legends are custodians of the game’s values and history.

“As we celebrate another successful edition, we remain committed to growing the game and giving back to our legends and supporters across all sporting codes,” Mathews said.

Saturday’s turnout suggested that message is resonating. Long before the opening match, supporters streamed into the National Stadium wrapped in jackets, blankets and club colours. By kickoff, sections of the venue had become a sea of black-and-white, gold-and-black, blue-and-gold and the familiar green associated with Magosi.

Beyond the football, the event also carried a strong community-development message. The Gambling Authority, one of the event’s partners, used the occasion to engage supporters on responsible gambling awareness while supporting the tournament’s broader social objectives.

The tournament opened with Orlando Pirates legends defeating Kaizer Chiefs legends 3-0 in a veterans’ version of the Soweto Derby. In the second semifinal, Mochudi Centre Chiefs legends overcame Township Rollers legends 4-2 to secure their place in the final.

Rollers later claimed third place with a 4-2 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the playoff before attention turned to the main event. The final saw Pirates roll back the years with an accomplished display. Featuring former stars such as Happy Jele, Lucky Lekgwathi, Tlou Segolela, Mpho Makola, Katlego Mashego and Clifford Ngobeni, the Buccaneers proved too strong for Centre Chiefs.

Beyond the football, the event also carried a strong community-development message. The Gambling Authority, one of the event’s partners, used the occasion to engage supporters on responsible gambling awareness while supporting the tournament’s broader social objectives.

In a statement, the authority thanked the thousands of supporters whose attendance helped turn the charity initiative into a success, noting that sport provided a powerful platform to promote informed decision-making and responsible behaviour.

The authority also highlighted the tournament’s role in supporting football legends while contributing to the development of young players. The tournament was also sponsored by Betway, Bona Life, and Staged Productions among others. Some of the proceeds from the tournament will go to charity.
